Barrel Electroplating Process
Barrel electroplating is a batch plating method commonly used for small metal components and loose parts that can be processed in bulk. During the process, a defined quantity of workpieces is loaded into a rotating perforated barrel. Electrical contact is established through conductive contacts inside the barrel, allowing the workpieces to function as the cathode while the barrel rotates.
As the barrel turns, the parts continuously tumble and reposition themselves. This movement helps expose different surfaces of the workpieces to the plating solution, while metal ions in the electrolyte are reduced and deposited onto the component surfaces under the applied electric field.
At the same time, fresh plating solution enters the barrel through the perforations in the barrel wall. This circulation helps replenish the solution around the workpieces and assists in removing hydrogen gas and depleted electrolyte from the working area.
